Recently recognized by the American Bar Association-Young Lawyers Division as having the best programming in the country for a large affiliate, the Austin Young Lawyers Association will continue to offer outstanding programs and benefits to its members and the community. Now in its 55 th year, AYLA plans to bring back some of its award winning programs such as the Leadership Academy, Judicial Brown Bag, Reindeer Games, and Holiday Baskets, as well as traditional favorites like monthly Docket Call happy hours, the Judicial Reception, and Day of Service.

The Board of Directors is excited about some of AYLA’s new programs, most especially the 2013 AYLA Trial Academy. With a nod towards the highly-successful Leadership Academy, which is intended to identify and train our future bar leaders, the Trial Academy is intended to enhance the professional experience of our community’s practicing attorneys. The program is a limited-enrollment hands-on trial basics course that is facilitated by the area’s most recognized judges and attorneys. Each participant must select either the criminal or civil track and is then guided through the trial process from start to finish over a six-week period. Every week, each class will hear lectures and see demonstrations from a different judge and attorney combination. For example, on Sept. 13, the Civil track will hear a lecture from Judge John Dietz and Austin legal legends Becky Beaver and Dicky Grigg on opening statements. Similarly, the Criminal track will hear from Judge Andy Austin and Marjorie Bachman on pre-trial motions. Over the course of the next five lectures, civil attorneys will learn about voir dire, direct examinations, cross examinations, closing arguments, and mediation. Criminal attorneys will hear lectures on voir dire/jury questions, opening statements, direct and cross examinations, closing statements, and sentencing.

As of today, confirmed judges include Dietz, Shepperd, Jenkins, Naranjo, and Meachum on the civil side, and Austin, Sage, Brown, Wahlberg, Mueller, and Earl on the criminal side. Confirmed civil attorneys include Becky Beaver, Dicky Grigg, Steve McConnico, Rick Yeomans, Tom Watkins, Jim Ewbank, and Karin Crump, while the Criminal Track will hear from David Sheppard, Carlos Garcia, David Peterson, Sam Bassett, Mindy Montford, and Jana Ortega.

Though the program is intended to acclimate Travis County’s newest attorneys to the local trial process and rules, AYLA has seen a great amount of interest from seasoned attorneys who are either changing their career focus or wanting to hone their trial skills. For years, Fletcher Brown was one of the Texas legal community’s best-kept secrets. Whether he was working with a small, rural health clinic in West Texas or a mega-hospital in Houston, Brown had a way of meeting and exceeding the expectations of his clients, gaining their loyalty along the way.
